Murphy visited Dodge City in January and told the Globe’s editor that a great number in his area desperately needed aid. Returning home from the flesh pots of Dodge he reflected gloomily on the contrast between town and countryside:

“One half of the world don’t know how the other half lives.” The fellow who got that off spoke the truth, but somehow or other he didn’t complete his sentence. He should have added, “nor do they care.” At least such is the case in Ford county. In the east end of the county there is want, privation and suffering, and in the west [that is, at Dodge] there is waste, extravagance, dissipation and licentiousness. The money spent foolishly in the “Famous City” in one week would be sufficient to keep the poor of the county for the entire winter. But the good work goes on. Those who spend foolishly continue to do so and the hungry ones are still hungry.42
